Who actually visits Canberra

The ACT Government's tourism snapshot for the year ending June 2026 puts total visitor spending at $3.2 billion. It counts about 4.5 million visitors, made up of roughly 2.1 million domestic day trippers, 2.2 million domestic overnight visitors and 179,000 international visitors. The year recorded 11.0 million visitor nights in total.

The purpose of visit matters for how you write. Among domestic overnight visitors, 43 percent came to visit friends and relatives, 32 percent for a holiday and 17 percent for business. International visitors split more evenly, with 40 percent on holiday and 35 percent visiting friends and relatives.

So the audience is not only holidaymakers choosing between hotels. It includes relatives booking a place near family, business travellers choosing a location, and international guests planning around a long itinerary.

Different visitors search in different ways

The table below is a planning guide for content, based on the visit purposes in the ACT figures. It describes typical behaviour, not measured search volumes.

Events create annual demand you can plan for

Floriade 2026 ran from 12 September to 11 October at Commonwealth Park, with a satellite site at Lanyon Homestead, according to the ACT Government. Enlighten Festival 2026 ran from 27 February to 9 March, with illuminations on landmark buildings and events involving Questacon and Parliament House.

Both are annual festivals in the ACT Government's events calendar, so one well-built page per event is worth more than a new page every season. Keep the URL permanent, update the dates once they are announced and state what you offer guests who attend. Pages that appear only a week before an event rarely have time to build visibility.

The same logic applies to quieter regular draws: national institutions, school holiday periods and sporting fixtures. We help you decide which are worth a page, using your own booking patterns as the guide.

Direct booking versus booking sites

Booking sites often take the top positions when someone searches for hotels in Canberra. Your direct site rarely wins that contest on generic searches, and we will not tell you otherwise. It can win on your name, on specific searches, and in Google's free booking links.

Google says free booking links show your site or hotel name with the room rate for the searched dates. It states that there is no cost for clicks. Eligible properties include those with a bid in a hotel campaign, available rates and a landing page, and hotels on a reservation system may already be connected through their provider.

Pages an accommodation website needs

Most accommodation sites have a booking engine and a handful of photos. These four additions tend to matter most.

One page per room or unit type

Each page states size, beds, facilities and what makes it different, so it can match a specific search.

A page on location and getting around

Say what is nearby, how guests arrive and where they park, in plain language.

An events page that stays live

It covers Floriade, Enlighten and other recurring events, with dates updated each year.

Policy details in text

Check-in times, cancellation terms and accessibility information answer questions before they become emails. Show the full nightly total, since the ACCC expects an advertised price to include unavoidable fees.

Building an annual event page, step by step

A recurring event rewards patience. This order keeps one page working across several years.

  1. Pick a permanent addressChoose a URL without a year in it, so links and visits carry forward every season.
  2. Publish before dates are confirmedState what you offer event guests now, and mark the dates as to be announced.
  3. Add dates when the organiser confirms themCopy them from the official event source, not from memory or last year's page.
  4. Link rooms to the eventPoint the page at the room types and booking path that suit event guests.
  5. Keep it live afterwardsMark the past event clearly and keep the page, so it is ready for the next announcement.

Tours, attractions and wineries

The region around Canberra is part of the visit. Destination NSW describes the Canberra wine region as having more than 140 vineyards and 30 cellar doors, with Murrumbateman about 40 kilometres north of the city.

  • Treat each venue as its own place: A cellar door, a tour and a restaurant each need their own accurate Google profile and page.
  • Show opening days honestly: Many rural venues trade limited days, so incorrect hours turn a long drive into a wasted trip.
  • Write for the whole region: Wine-region visitors may search under Canberra, Murrumbateman or NSW terms, so content should cover the area they think of.
  • Make booking and group details obvious: Tastings, tours and group visits need a clear path to book and clear numbers on capacity.

Scope: what we take on and what we leave alone

We aim to make your own site a stronger option next to the booking sites, not to remove them from the picture.

We do

  • Improve room, location and event pages so they match real searches
  • Check your Google profile and, with your booking provider, your free booking link setup
  • Write plain, accurate content that visitors can act on
  • Report on direct enquiries and bookings where you can measure them

We do not

  • Promise to outrank booking sites on generic hotel searches
  • Write invented guest reviews or claim awards you do not hold
  • Manage your booking engine or channel manager
  • Offer guarantees on rankings or occupancy

When to start, and what affects cost

Fixes to your Google profile and booking links can show within weeks. New event and room pages need months to build visibility, so start well before the season you care about. Our local SEO work and Google Business Profile service cover the foundations, and SEO content covers the pages.

Cost depends on the number of properties or venues, the state of your site and how much new content you need. For location context, see South Canberra for the Parliamentary area and Kingston, and the Queanbeyan region for properties across the border. The industries list shows where else we can help.

Frequently asked questions

Can a small Canberra guesthouse compete with booking sites?

Not on generic hotel searches, and we will say so. You can compete on your own name, on specific searches such as the type of stay and neighbourhood, and through Google's free booking links if you are eligible. A clear site and accurate profile give direct booking a fair chance.

What are Google free booking links?

They are unpaid listings that show your site or hotel name with the room rate for the dates searched. Google says there is no cost for clicks. Hotels using Hotel Ads are automatically eligible, and hotels on a reservation system may be connected through their provider.

Do events like Floriade matter for SEO?

They can. Floriade ran from 12 September to 11 October in 2026 and returns annually, so a permanent event page with updated dates builds visibility over several years. The page should state what you offer attendees, and should be live well ahead of the event.

Should I write content for visiting friends and relatives?

Yes. The ACT tourism snapshot shows 43 percent of domestic overnight visitors came to see friends and relatives. They often want a place near family, easy parking and flexible cancellation, so a location page and plain terms are worth more than lifestyle copy.

Does my winery or tour business need a Canberra-focused site?

It needs to be easy to find for the searches your visitors use. Many search for Canberra wineries even though cellar doors in places such as Murrumbateman are in NSW. We write for how visitors describe the region, and keep your profile accurate.

How soon before an event should I start?

Months, not weeks. A new event page needs time to be found and to earn trust. Start the page well before dates are announced, keep the address permanent, and update it each year. We do not give guarantees, but early pages have a better chance.
